Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina's personal wealth is estimated at around Tk 2 crore including Tk 1.19 crore interests from savings, her counsel disclosed yesterday. The former prime minister, who was arrested on July 16 and is facing two extortion cases of Tk 8 crore, however, did not sign the draft wealth statement yesterday, which will have to be submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) by Wednesday. "She [Hasina] asked me to come back tomorrow [today] after correcting some information in the statements. She has been facing difficulties preparing an accurate statement as all the documents have been seized from her house immediately after her arrest on July 16," Khandaker Moniruzzaman, an income tax lawyer of the AL chief, told the reporters emerging from a meeting with Hasina at the sub-jail on Jatiya Sangsad premises. The lawyer said that the AL chief has accounts in eight banks. The AL president received Tk 1.19 crore bank interests since her return in 1981. Hasina refuted some newspaper reports that she possesses around Tk 30 crore in 36 bank accounts. "It is completely false. I have only eight bank accounts," Hasina said as quoted by her lawyer. Moniruzzaman said that Hasina's assets also include two jeeps and some lands in her Tungipara home, which she asked him to hand over to the poor people currently occupying those lands. The lawyer said that the AL chief does not have any land or house in Dhaka. The lawyer, who held a more than two-hour long discussion with the AL chief from 4:00pm, said that the ACC and the Bangladesh Bank are not cooperating in preparing and getting the wealth accounts of the former premier. He can submit Hasina's wealth accounts by Wednesday if he gets cooperation from ACC, the lawyer added. "If she [Hasina] or me fail to get accurate accounts, then we will have no alternative but to prepare an approximate wealth statement by evaluating previous year's accounts and submit it to the ACC," Moniruzzaman said. He said the AL chief did not get any response so far from the government over her appeal to stay with her ailing husband Dr Wazed Miah, who has been undergoing treatment at a city hospital since her arrest. Hasina is hopeful about a positive response, as her husband's condition is not well, he added. The former prime minister also expressed dissatisfaction as the bank accounts of all her family members have been frozen. Moniruzzaman said that Hasina expressed grave concern over the flood situation of the country. "I will be very happy if my party leaders and workers stand beside the flood affected people," the lawyer quoted Hasina as saying. She was worried that her party is not being allowed to help the flood victims, he said. Hasina also urged all including the caretaker government to help the flood victims so that no one dies due to flood or lack of foods, the lawyer added.
