Road crashes kill 6, injure 57

At least six people were killed and 57 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Khulna, Barisal and Gaibandha yesterday and on Friday night.UNB reports: An unidentified man was crushed under the wheels of a minibus at Khilkhet in the city yesterday. Local sources said the accident took place near Lotus Kamal Bhaban at about 1:00pm, killing the unidentified man, aged about 25, on the spot. The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue. BSS from Narayanganj adds: At least 35 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, in a road accident at Kanchpur Nayabari on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway under Sonargaon Police Station yesterday. Police said the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus of Bilash Paribahan from Chandpur skidded off the road and fell into a canal when the vehicle tried to overtake a microbus at 11:00am. Fire Service divers and local people rescued the trapped passengers with multiple wounds from the ill-fated bus. Of the inured, the condition of Mahedi, 27, Munir, 29, Ismail, 28, Masud Khan, 25, Zahir, 20, Kabir, 20, Swades Mazumdar, 30, Ashutosh, 30, Tofazzal, 55, and Tawhid, 30, were stated to be critical. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Modern Clinic at Narayanganj. Police seized the bus but its driver and helper managed to escape. Staff correspondent from Khulna adds: Two people were killed in separate road accidents at Phultala and Batiaghata upazilas in the district yesterday. They were identified as Tulu Gazi, 31, and Firoze Ahmed, 28. Witnesses and police said Tulu was run over by a passenger bus of Hanif Paribahan near Phultala bus stand at about 12:45, leaving him dead on the spot. This accident occurred when he was crossing the road riding a motorcycle. In another accident, day labourer Firoze was also crushed under wheels of Satkhira- bound truck from Khulna at 4:00pm at Nijkhamar area under Batiaghata upazila. Police seized the truck while its driver managed to escape. Our correspondent from Barisal reports: An old man crushed under the wheels of a pick-up in front of the Rab-8 camp yesterday. The victim was identified as Moslem Ali, 70, of Rupatali in the city. Moslem was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Our Corrspondent from Gaibandha adds: Two people were killed and 22 others injured in a road accident on Rangpur-Bogra highway at Dhaperhat on Friday night. The dead were identified as Rahima Begum, 24, and her son Rakib, 7. Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when a Gaibandha-bound passenger bus hit a rickshaw van, leaving Rahima and her son Rakib dead on the spot. One Amirul Islam along with his wife and seven-year-old son were returning home at village Monglapara under Sadullapur upazila from his father-in-law's house by the rickshaw van. The rickshaw puller and Amirul were injured. At least 20 bus passengers also received injuries. They were rushed to Palashbari and Pirganj Health complexes. Police seized the bus but the driver and helper managed to flee. A case was filed with Plashbari Police Station.
