'Ashadi Purnima' celebrated at Rajban Bihar

'Ashadi Purnima', a Buddhist religious festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour at the Rajban Bihar in Rangamati town last Saturday.

Buddhist devotees from far-flung areas of Ranagamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari gathered at the Bihar to observe the occasion.

Members of Chakma, Marma and Tangchangya communities attended the event to pay respect to Sadhana Nanda Mohasthabir, widely known as "Bana Vante", chief monk of Rajban Bihar.

Because of his spiritual authority acquired through years of meditation at the deep forests in the Hill Tracts, local Buddhists consider him to be a living embodiment of the values of Lord Buddha.

In his speech, the Bana Vante urged devotees to be "archya" (polite, modest, honest and moral). He said that abiding by the "sheel" (philosophies of Lord Buddha) a man can lead a pious and blissful life.

Hoisting of Buddhist flag, "pancha sheela", "pinda daan", "Buddha murti daan", "sangha daan" and "pradip puja" were conducted at the function.

Aroti Roy and her son barrister Debashish Roy, the current Chakma King and former CHT Affairs Minister Kalpa Ranjan Chakma were present at the festival.
