Bappa Majumder on Dolchhut's new album and more

After releasing their debut album Aah in 1997, Dolchhut, one of the leading contemporary bands in the country, is working on their fourth album. Their previous albums are Hridoypur and Akashchuri. Bappa Majumder, vocalist of the band, talked about Dolchhut's new album as well as contemporary music, musicians and other issues in a recent interview with The Daily Star.

Nearly five years after releasing their last album Akashchuri (2002), Dolchhut is working on new compositions. Songs by the band that went on to become popular include Chokh, Rongila, Yasmin, Joler daamey, Gari choley na, Baaji, Bioscope, Akashchuri and many more.

Dolchhut's new album will include ten songs; four have already been recorded. According to Bappa, the band's new songs maintain the genre audience is used to. However, certain songs on contemporary issues are experimental. Dhori machh na chhui pani, one of the new songs, is an adaptation of M. Aslam Liton's poem. Bappa is composing all the songs. The title of the album is yet to be finalised.

About the rather long gap since their last album was released, Bappa said, "Sanjib Chowdhury (another member of Dolchhut) was busy and I was occupied with my career as a singer-composer. A new album requires undivided attention."

Apart from Dolchhut's new album and his career as a solo musician, Bappa is currently working in several TV programmes. He is one of the guest judges in the popular talent hunt on Channel-i, DrockStars 2. He is also working with some new talents; grooming them to carve a niche in our music arena.

Bappa featuring Sandipan - tribute to S.D. Barman and R.D. Barman, is a recent album that was appreciated by music lovers. The album featured hugely popular songs of legendary composers S.D. Barman and R.D. Barman like Phirey esho Anuradha, Mon-e porey Rubi Roy, Jhilmil jhilmil and more, re-arranged by Bappa.

On the album Bappa said, "I've always been an ardent fan of Sachin Dev and R.D's songs. It was a great experience to be able to interpret them in my own way, keeping the compositions intact."

Bappa has also worked with Anjan Dutt, popular jibonmukhi singer of Kolkata, in the album Icchey Korey Ekshathey. Bappa composed all the songs, except one, for the album. For the first time, Anjan Dutt rendered a composition by another musician. "Anjan Dutt singing my composition was one of my greatest achievements," said an elated Bappa.

About contemporary musicians and the music scene, the artiste said that our musicians are talented and each has developed a unique style. Ornob, Habib, Fuad, Nemesis, Watson Brothers and Parthib have all made an impact on the contemporary music scene.

On the talent hunt, DrockStars, Bappa said that initiatives such as this can have a positive impact on our music in many ways. "The programme is creating opportunities for budding musicians to demonstrate their potentials, which will be beneficiary for them as well as for the music industry. Besides, the show has become a platform for popular bands, exchanging views, which is also essential for our music," added Bappa.
