Search Committee reconstituted

The government has reconstituted the Search Committee in a bid to ensure transparency in the appointment of vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors and treasurers to the country's public universities.The gazette notification issued on May 13 in this regard has been amended to reconstitute the Search Committee, said a PID handout yesterday. It said Education Secretary has been made chairman of the reconstituted seven-member committee. Other members are DU Economics Professor Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, founder VC of East West University Mohammad Farashuddin, former Buet VC Dr Nuruddin Ahmed, former Dean of Veterinary Department of Bangladesh Agriculture University, Mymensingh Prof SM Bulbul, UGC member Dr Ehsanul Haq and joint secretary (university) of Education Ministry. The joint secretary to the Education Ministry will act as the member secretary of the Search Committee, the handout said. The committee will collect the latest lists of senior professors of different universities and will propose names of three against a post of vice-chancellor of any university. The committee will also recommend names of senior professors and persons with adequate qualifications and experiences for the posts of pro-VC and treasurer. But Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jahangirnagar and Chittagong Universities will remain out of the purview of the Search Committee, as appointment rules of these institutions are different.
