Ashari Purnima celebrated in Chittagong

Ashari Purnima, a religious festival of Buddhists, was celebrated through a daylong programme at different monasteries of the port city yesterday with due enthusiasm.Hundreds of Buddhist devotees gathered at Chittagong Buddhist Monastery, Katalganj Nabapandit Bihar, Devpahar International Buddhist Monastery, Mogaltuli Shakyamuni Bihar and other monasteries to offer special prayer seeking peace, progress and prosperity of the country. Bangladesh Buddhist Association arranged an exhibition of different relics of Lord Buddha including his hair, bone and footprint preserved in Chittagong Buddhist Monastery. Mentionable, hair relic of Gautam Buddha was handed over to the representatives of Sri Lankan government at a ceremony at the monastery on July 18, when Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohita Bogollagama also handed over a footprint of Buddha as a gift. A huge crowd was seen at Chittagong Buddhist Monastery at Nandankanon since morning to have a look on the relics and offer prayer. Association President Ajit Ranjan Barua said they usually arrange the exhibition for only once in a year on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. But as many devotees who could not see the footprint of Buddha earlier, had requested us to make an arrangement to show the same on the occasion of Ashari Purnima, he added.
