'Formulate policy on refugee issue’
A daylong training programme on 'Refugee Law', jointly organised by Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was held in Chittagong on Saturday, says a press release.The participants placed some recommendations including formulation of a comprehensive policy on asylum and refugee issues, accession to the Refugee Convention and its Protocol and adoption of a national legislation on asylum and refugees. They also called for capacity building of officials of the government and NGOs working in the refugee operation, better treatment for the asylum seekers and refugees, and continuous support from international community for refugee operation. AKM Anwar Hossain, metropolitan sessions judge of Chittagong, was present at the inaugural session as the chief guest. Prof Zakir Hossain, dean, law faculty, University of Chittagong, Tslimur Rahman, executive director, BLAST, Adv Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Coordinator of BLAST's Chittagong Unit, and Dr Uttam Kumar Das, national protection officer, UNHCR Bangladesh, attended the session presided over by Advocate Abdul Quddus, president of Chittagong District Bar Association. Prof Zakir Hossain, Taslimur Rahman and Dr Uttam Kumar Das conducted different sessions. Some 45 representatives from the bar association, academic institutes and NGOs took part in the training programme.
