Newspaper ads to ask Siraj, Harris to surrender

A Dhaka court yesterday directed the authorities to publish advertisements in two national dailies asking former minister Shajahan Siraj, his wife Rabeya Haider and son Rajib Siraj to appear before the court within three days in connection with eleven tax evasion cases.

The same court directed the authorities to publish an advertisement in two dailies asking Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, to appear before it within three days in a money laundering case.

Detained former communications minister Nazmul Huda and his wife advocate Sigma Huda were shown arrested in a graft case while a Dhaka court yesterday allowed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to quiz former state minister for communications Salahuddin Ahmed in prison.

Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq passed the order as Siraj and his family members did not appear before the court yesterday in connection with the cases filed against them.

On July 16, the same court issued arrest warrants against them after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the cases for evading huge income tax. Later, the court ordered attachment of their properties.

According to the money laundering case, Harris hoarded foreign currencies worth about Tk 5.64 lakh. On February 4, the joint forces seized two briefcases with the foreign currencies from the house of Harris Chowdhury's Gulshan residence.
