He was identified as Dulal, 33, regional commander of Gonomukti Fouj. Hailed from Belgharia village in Sadar upazila, Dulal was wanted in a number of cases including two for murder, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided Charmilpara where Dulal and his cohorts were holding a secret meeting.

Sensing the presence of the police, the outlaws opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Police said Dulal received bullets during the "shootout" while his accomplices fled away. The bullet-hit outlaw was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, they added.

Police recovered one shutter gun and four bullets from the spot.
