Writ petition today against Hasina's arrest

Lawyers for detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina will file writ petition with the High Court today challenging the legality of her arrest and the 'extortion' case filed against her under the emergency powers rules.

AL sources said a team of six senior lawyers led by Barrister Rafique ul Huq will file the writ petition for the former prime minister.

"We will move to the High Court tomorrow (Sunday) challenging the arrest of Sheikh Hasina and the case against her," AL Law Secretary Advocate Sahara Khatun told reporters yesterday after a meeting with acting party President Zillur Rahman at his residence.

Tawfique Newaz, one of the counsels for Hasina who visited her at the special jail yesterday, AL leaders Ataur Rahman Khan Kaiser, Shubid Ali Bhuyian, Dr Dipu Moni and Advocate Rahmat Ali were also present at the meeting.

Sahara Khatun, who is on the legal aide committee for freeing Hasina, said they have enough grounds to challenge the case. They have already received an approved copy of the power of attorney for Hasina's lawyers to fight the case against her.

She noted, "Hasina was arrested under normal laws but later the case was put under the emergency powers rules."

The joint forces arrested the AL chief in an extortion case on July 16 and produced her in a magistrate's court that sent her to jail.

Azam J Chowdhury, managing director of Eastcoast Trading Pvt Ltd, filed the case against Hasina and Sheikh Selim on June 13 for extorting Tk 2.99 crore from him. And Sheikh Rehana's name was included in the charge sheet as her 'involvement' in the extortion was found during investigation.
