An evening of folk tunes
Musical programme by Bangladesh Loko Sangeet Parishod

Bangladesh Loko Sangeet Parishad (BLSP) arranged a folk music programme at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Hall, Central Public Library on July 24. The organisation aims to recover, preserve, practice and conduct researches on traditional folk music.

Folklore expert Dr. Wakil Ahmed, who is also the vice chancellor of National University, attended the programme as chief guest. A discussion was held prior to the musical programme, chaired by the president of BLSP, Indramohan Rajbongshi. Nasrin Ferdaus Chaman, general secretary of the organisation, delivered the welcome speech.

Claiming the initiative taken by BLSP "innovative", Dr. Wakil Ahmed said, "We don't know the names of the composers of several popular folk songs. The research-based initiative by the organisation to find out the origins of traditional folk songs is highly commendable. Several key elements in different genres of folk songs are missing or on the verge of distortion. Collective endeavours -- incorporating the experts to uphold and preserve our rural music are much needed. "

Dr. Ahmed also critically analysed the styles of rural bards at the programme.

Indramohan Rajbongshi said, "For the last ten years we have been regularly arranging these programmes. Today's event is the 78th arrangement. Because of limitations in funds, it's difficult to continue research and programmes such as these. We are trying our best to present our heritage of folk music to the mass. Previously, a three-day programme was arranged which included presentations of songs of 100 bards. Currently we are planning a month-long programme featuring songs of 1000 bards."

The discussion was followed by music. The soiree began with a group presentation of Fakir Duddu Shah's (a disciple of Fakir Lalon Shah) composition Din-er din furailo. Artistes of BLSP rendered 24 well-known and unfamiliar songs composed by Hason Raja, Jasimuddin, Kabial Romesh Shill, Radharomon, Bijoy Sarkar, Ukil Munshi, Shah Abdul Karim, Kangal Harinath, Panchanon Goshai, Bhoba Pagla, Kanai Lal Shill, Roshik Lal, Fotik Chand, Amar Chandra Shill, Abdul Karim, Rajob Ali Dewan, Jadobendu, Mon Mohan Datta, Poran Shadhu, Osman Khan, Abdul Latif, Rowshan Yajdani, A.K.M. Abdul Aziz and Meeradev Burman.
