'Plus-minus formula' can't be objective of reforms: ex-CEC

Former chief election commissioner (CEC) Justice MA Rouf yesterday said implementation of so-called plus-minus formula cannot be the objective of ongoing reforms in politics in the country.

"Plus-minus cannot be the intention of political reforms," he said, adding, " Establishing rights of people should be the goal of actual reforms."

Justice Rouf was addressing a meeting tilted 'Ongoing political reforms' to commemorate the 50th founding anniversary of National Awami Party (Bhashani) at the National Press Club in the city.

"We do not say that our politicians did not commit any crime, but only those who committed crime, should be punished," he said.

"Similarly, we can't send them (those who committed crime) into exile as they are the citizens of the country," added the former CEC.

Presided over by Moshtaq Ahmed Bhashani, the meeting was also addressed by the initiator of newly formed political party Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Advocate Fazlur Rahman, MH Majlish and Afzal Hossain Kaiser.

They lauded the role of army and caretaker government for the drive against corruption.

"Our independence and integrity would be put under threat if this government fails," PDP leader said, adding, " Formation of new political party is a must to save the country."
