The murder of a National Security Intelligence (NSI) official has prompted the law enforcement agencies to crack down on 'Aggyan' and 'Malam' parties in the city and its adjoining areas, leading to the arrest of at least 24 criminals in the last six days. Sheikh Atiar Rahman, deputy assistant director of NSI, was found murdered at Kafrul on the night of July 19. The members of 'Aggyan' party are engaged in robbing people after drugging them while members of 'Malam' party rob their victims after applying toxic ointment to their eyes. Police launched the crackdown on 'Aggyan' and 'Malam' parties suspecting that they are behind the murder of the NSI official, said the investigation officer (IO) of the murder case, Abdul Hakim of Kafrul Police Station. He also said that they could not extract any new information about the murder from three Aggyan Party members during their remand. Nine more members of Aggyan and Malam parties, arrested on Monday, will be taken on remand for interrogation, he added. On Tuesday, a team of Detective Branch (DB) arrested Aziz, a member of Aggyan Party, from Mohammadpur who DB members said received training in India on how to drug people. DB sources also said that Aziz is known as 'guru' in his circle. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-3 arrested eight muggers from Shantibagh, Mirhazirbagh and Dayaganj areas in the last two days. Rab-9 arrested three members of Aggyan Party from Belanagar bus stand in Narsingdi on Tuesday night. Law enforcement agencies recovered sleep-inducing drugs, toxic ointment and money from the possession of the arrestees. Talking to The Daily Star, Mamun Ferdous, son of Atiar, expressed his dissatisfaction as there is no headway in the murder case. "My father was an NSI official, but the law enforcement agencies could not find out the real killers even after seven days of the murder." Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad told The Daily Star last night that he instructed the law enforcement agencies to step up the drive against Aggyan and Malam parties who became active in recent time.
