Storm kills 1, damages hundreds of houses


Violent storms ripped into six districts of the country yesterday, killing a baby and injuring some 100 people.

Besides, several hundred thatched houses were also damaged and thousands of trees uprooted by the storms.

Many people in Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Jamalpur, Comilla, Chandpur and Laxmipur left homeless by the tornados were forced to live under open sky in utter distress, reports received in Dhaka said.

UNB reported that an eight-month-old boy named Nazim died in a house collapse near Karimbazar in Hatia and over 50 thatched houses were damaged and many trees were uprooted by storm that hit villages in Chatkhil and Hatia upazilas in Noakhali.

Chatkhil Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abul Khayer said that the fierce storm swept through Parkot, Manikpur, Islampur, Murial, Badarkati and Mema villages of the upazila at about 3:00am.

A correspondent from Comilla said that more than 50 people, including women and children, were injured and 200 thatched houses and several schools and mosques were damaged by the storm in the district. Besides, hundreds of trees were uprooted.

The storm swept Sholapukuria, Mochagara, Jatrapur and Bhabanipur villages of Muradnagar upazila at 7:00am damaging over 150 houses and injuring 30 people, the report further said. The building of Mochagara High School in the upazila was damaged seriously.

The storm at the villages of Manohorganj left over 30 thatched houses damaged and 15 people injured, while it damaged 25 houses and left 6 people injured at Daudkandi.

Comilla deputy commissioner has started assessing the damage and sending relief to the affected people.

Our correspondent from Brahmanbaria reported that at least 15 people were hurt and 100 thatched houses were damaged as a tornado swept over six villages of Ashuganj upazila at about 10:00am. A few hundreds of trees were also uprooted.

The affected villages are Madupur, Pachbhita, Charchartala, Araishida, Bahadurpur and Durgapur.

Of the injured, a few were admitted to the Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and the others were treated at the local clinics, locals said.

Supply of electricity was snapped at Araishida and Durgapur unions due to the tornado.

Over 300 thatched houses were damaged when a tornado lashed at some nine villages at two upazilas in Jamalpur district yesterday morning, our correspondent from Tangail reports.

The affected villages are Nishindi, Parpara, Naricali, Binonder Para, Goherpara, and Pingalhati at Sadar upazila and Aramnagar, Satpoa, and Bolaidiar at Sarishabari upazila.

The tornado that broke at around 7:00am lasted for only two minutes, sources said.

Around 100 thatched houses at Sadar and other 200 at Sarishabari upazila were damaged in the storm while a large number of trees were uprooted. The power supply of the areas was also disrupted, sources added.

In Sarishabari, two people including Rustam Ali of Satpoa village, were injured and were admitted to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex.

The tornado damaged 20 structures and left at least 5 people injured at Haziganj of Chandpur. Besides, around 50 houses were damaged and at least 20 people were left injured in the same storm at Ramganj of Laxmipur district.
