Drug peddlers snatch their fellow, pistol from Rab men

A gang of drug peddlers snatched an arrested drug peddler and a pistol from plainclothes members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Baya Bazar on the outskirts of Rajshahi city yesterday evening.The Rab members fired several gunshots to bring the situation under control, but all the criminal managed to escape. Witnesses said a four-member Rab team in plainclothes went to Baya Bazar in two motorcycles and caught a man with 10 kg of Ganja. When the Rab members were dragging the drug peddler, his accomplices were locked in a scuffle with Rab members over their identity. At one stage, the drug peddlers managed to snatch the arrested person and a pistol after holding Rab member Mamun hostage. When other Rab members fired several gunshots, the drug peddlers fled the scene, leaving behind Rab member Mamun. Senior police and Rab officials rushed to the spot and deployed additional security men in the area. When contacted, Officer-in-charge of Shah Makhdum Police Station Mohammad Rafique said the Rab and police launched a joint operation to recover the pistol and arrest the culprits.
