EC prepares to start voter listing in Rajshahi

The Election Commission (EC) expects to start collecting voter details in the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) area from the first week of August as hectic preparations got underway.

Two election commissioners -- Muhammad Sohul Hussain and Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain -- arrived in Rajshahi yesterday evening to monitor the preparation.

Both the new voter roll and the national identity (NID) cards will contain voters' photographs. The NIDs will also have voters' fingerprints -- a biometric security feature, said the EC officials.

After the completion of the pilot project in Sreepur of Gazipur, the EC is going to launch the full-fledged voters' enumeration process in Rajshahi. Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed is likely to inaugurate the programme, the election commissioners added.

The district EC office already appointed 30 assistant registration officers, 908 information collectors and 182 supervisors for 30 wards under RCC. The enumeration process, with logistic support from the army, will be conducted at over 100 centres in the city.
