Armed robbers gunned down a Bangladesh Bank (BB) official during a robbery inside his residence in Dhamrai municipal area of Dhaka early yesterday. The victim, Hedayetullah, 52, was a deputy general manager (offsite supervision department) of the central bank. Quoting family members, police said a gang of five to six entered a room on the 1st floor of a two-storey building around 2:30am cutting window grills of the kitchen. Then the masked robbers knocked on the door of the room where Hedayetullah's daughter Suraia Begum, her husband and children were sleeping. As soon as Suraia opened the door, the robbers entered the room and made them hostage at gunpoint prompting them to shout for help. The robbers shot into Hedayetullah's left eye from point-blank range as he rushed to the room hearing the shouting, Iqbal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhamrai police station, told The Daily Star.As Hedayetullah collapsed on the floor, the robbers fled the scene quickly without looting anything, the OC said. Hedayetullah was rushed to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Later, the body was sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College for autopsy. Although, Hedayetullah's elder brother Aminur Rashid filed a case with Dhamrai police station mentioning that a gang which had entered the house for robbery shot his brother dead, the victim's daughter Suraia Begum suspects that the gang had entered their house to kill her father. OC Iqbal Hossain told newsmen that they have yet to figure out the motive behind the murder. He however said they are trying to arrest those who are involved in the killing and once the killers are arrested, the motive will be known. Meanwhile, Hedayetullah's body was taken to the head office of Bangladesh Bank at noon after autopsy. After a namaz-e-janaza there, his body was taken to his village home in Dhamrai. Hedayetullah, who joined the BB in 1981 as an officer, used to live in his own house in Bijoynagar area of Dhamrai municipality. Father of a son and two daughters, Hedayetullah, used to commute to his office from the village home.
