20 injured as RMG workers clash in Gazipur

At least 20 workers were injured and a garment factory was ransacked during clashes between workers of two garments factories in Gazipur yesterday morning. The clash erupted at around 9:30am after workers of Stockholm Knitwear Ltd. beat up two workers of Merchant Sweater over allegations that the two teased female workers of Stockholm Knitwear, witnesses said. Both the factories are in the same building at Bhogra in Sadar Upazila. Stockholm Knitwear is on the first floor and the Merchant Sweater is on the second floor of the Islam Tower. Hearing the news of beating, hundreds of workers of Merchant Sweater attacked the Stockholm Knitwear factory and vandalised 16 knitting machines and pieces of cloths, sources said. Later, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police stepped in to bring the situation under control. The law enforcers also brought the authorities of the two factories to a negotiating table at noon and settled the issue. They reached a decision that the Merchant Sweater will pay Tk 2 lakh compensation to Stockholm Knitting and action will be taken against the workers responsible.
