"Strengthen adult literacy efforts"
No substantial adult literacy effort exists at present, other than the post-literacy and continuing education project targeting 350,000 participants in about five years. This is in part due to lack of agreement about where the country stands on the level of literacy of the population and what would be realistic goals and targets.

Speakers at the 'National Advocacy Workshop with Policymakers on Adult Literacy' said this yesterday. Bangladesh Centre for Communication Programmes (BCCP) with the support of Unesco organised the workshop at the Spectra Convention Centre in the city, says a press release.

The workshop recommended implementing the advocacy literacy programme in a sustainable and continuous manner, forming a advocacy forum including donor, government, agency and NGOs, strengthening advocacy efforts for sustainable community learning approach, and allocating separate budget for adult literacy programme.

Director General of Bureau of Non-Formal Education, Md Rafiquzzaman attended the workshop as the chief guest while Dr Manzoor Ahmed, director of Brac University Institute of Educational Development, presented the keynote paper titled 'The State of Literacy'.

The specific objectives of the workshop were to create champions on advocacy for adult literacy among policymakers, development partners and civil society members; to reinforce national momentum in building commitments for adult literacy programme through advocacy and create awareness about the needs and importance of adult literacy programme for national development.
