Children stop another child marriage
Our correspondent, Satkhira
A 14-year old girl was rescued yesterday from an attempted under-age marriage at Laxmanpur village in Tala upazila as over a hundred students from Ghona High School took to the streets in protest. The agitating students rushed to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and turned in a memorandum requesting him to intervene and save Moni Mala Das, a class VII student of the school, from being illegally married off to a 25-year-old youth from Paikgachha in Khulna. Mohammad Waliullah Mia, UNO of Tala upazila, summoned the girl's father, Shanti Ram, and asked him to call off the wedding that was scheduled for yesterday. Shanti Ram complied with the UNO's instructions and signed a bond stating that he would not arrange any such child marriage in the future. On Tuesday, Moni Mala told her friends at school that her father was planning to marry her off on Thursday (yesterday), but she could not dare to go against her father's decision. Her friends then tried to talk her father into cancelling the wedding, but he did not pay heed to their request. Her friends decided to bring out a procession and inform the UNO of the matter on Wednesday when Moni Mala told them that her father was still firm on his decision. UNO Mohammad Waliullah Mia confirmed the incident.
