Police yesterday arrested six activists of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations at different places in the country as they brought out processions, protesting AL chief Sheikh Hasina's arrest and demanding her release, violating the emergency rules. Meanwhile, protests continued in some parts of the country for the forth consecutive day. Our Rangpur correspondent reports: Police arrested three AL and its front organisation leaders at their houses at Mahiganj in Rangpur early yesterday in connection with bringing out a procession in support for a hartal demanding Hasina's release. The arrestees are Mostafizur Rahman, president of Rangpur town unit Jubo League, Mehedi Hasan Jahangir, vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra League Rangpur unit and Alamgir Hosen Chowdhury, secretary of ward-14 AL. Police raided their houses around midnight and arrested them under section 54. They were sent to Rangpur Central Jail after they were produced before a court yesterday. Officer-in-charge of Rangpur Police Station said a case was filed in connection with the bringing out of a procession against 13 unidentified people. Meanwhile, the hartal called under the banner of Awami Families of Rangpur was not observed, as all commercial centres in Rangpur remained open, traffic was normal and offices remained fully functional. Our Sylhet correspondent reports: Police picked up three local AL leaders as they brought out a procession at Baghmara of Biswambharpur upazila in Sunamganj yesterday afternoon demanding the release of Hasina. The arrested are upazila AL chief Masumuzzaman Master, general secretary Benazir Ahmed and organising secretary Abdul Hai Manik. Police picked them up when they were heading for the upazila headquarters in a procession with 40-50 men around 5:00pm.
