5 of a family killed in gas cylinder blast

Five members of a family were killed and four others injured in a fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion at a tin-roofed bamboo made house at Jagannathpur upazila headquarters under Sunamganj district on Tuesday night. The dead are Kripesh Das, 45, owner of a hardware shop, his daughters Ruma Das, 10, Nima Das, 4, and Promi Das, 2, and Kripesh's nephew Bishu Das, 20. Kripesh and his three daughters were burnt alive at the house, while Bishu succumbed to his injuries at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital at about 11:30 am yesterday. Police said the gas cylinder exploded with a big bang when Kripesk's wife Nila Das lit the gas burner at their kitchen at around 7:45pm. The explosion triggered a fire that soon engulfed the entire house, they added Kripesh along with manager of his shop Rana Das was in a room next to the kitchen and his children were in another room of the house. Locals brought the blaze under control at about 9:30pm but faced trouble to enter the house as the main gate was locked. Some of them, however, jumped over the gate and rescued Kripesh's wife Nila, nephews Bishu Das, Topu Das and Rajib Das and manager of his shop Rana Das with serious burn injuries. Bishu died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
