City markets asked to use CFL bulb to save energy

Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (Desa) has called for using CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs in all kitchen markets, supermarkets, showrooms and shops to save energy. The call was made after a meeting on July 1 at the conference room of Desa where it was decided that all the kitchen markets should change the existing halogen, mercury and incandescent bulbs and replace them with CFL bulbs. The meeting, presided over by Desa Chairman Brig General Mohammad Nazrul Hasan, was attended by leaders of various kitchen traders associations. According to experts, a substantial amount of electricity can be saved by using CFL bulbs. The Desa chairman visited the Mohammadpur kitchen market on Monday to see the new lighting system. When measured, it was found that there was 60 percent less usage of electricity in the market than regular usage which also meant they would pay 60 percent less in electricity bills. Mohammadpur and Hatirpul Kitechen Traders Association have already replaced the existing bulbs at their markets with the CFL bulbs in an effort to save energy and cost. It is expected that all the kitchen markets would soon follow the suit.
