'Follow Park's example'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to rule out adding more Asian stars to his Old Trafford squad -- if they follow the same route taken by South Korean midfielder Park Ji-Sung.

Ferguson, currently in Tokyo with United on the first-leg of their Asian tour, is due to take his team to Seoul on Wednesday for a friendly against FC Seoul in the South Korean capital on Friday.

Park will miss the game due to a knee injury that is set to keep him on the sidelines until January, but the popular midfielder has already made a big impact at United since arriving from PSV Eindhoven two years ago.

Few Asians have made a real impact in the Premiership, with Japanese duo Junichi Inamoto and Hidetoshi Nakata struggling to reproduce their international form during their time in England.

Aside from Park, only Chinese defender Sun Jihai at Manchester City can claim to have exceeded expectations in the most high-profile league in the world, although South Korea's Lee Young-Pyo and Seol Ki-Hyeon are starting to make a mark at Spurs and Reading respectively.

Ferguson admits that he would certainly sign more Asian players if they can prove themselves in Europe before heading to United.

"It's possible that I could sign more Asian players, but it's hard to judge them while they are playing in their domestic leagues," he said.

"Park came to us from PSV in Holland, so he had already proved himself in a high quality and competitive European league before arriving at United.

"That is what Asian players need to do.

"From our point of view at United, we need to see if they are capable of playing for a club of our size, but Ji-Sung showed that during his time at PSV."

The only other Asian in the United squad is China's Dong Fangzhou, who was signed in 2003 for 3.5 million pounds (6.8 million dollars) -- a record for Chinese football.

He was loaned to Belgium's Royal Antwerp until he became eligible for a work visa in England and was finally rewarded with a first-team debut in May against Chelsea.

Dong is not with United on their Asian tour, but is instead on international duty with China at the Asian Cup.
