Ban on smoking
Mohammed Alauddin, Green Road, Dhaka
Smoking openly, even in public places, has not come to an end. Govt. actions to stop it are limited to stopping ads. I don't understand how a poison grade item is sold in shelf in all places, even in small shops and restaurants. I would suggest the following steps which will help eliminate this injurious habit of smoking as well as tobacco chewing:(1) Cultivation of tobacco should be allowed only as an export item and permit given to cultivators for limited cultivation under govt. inspection for export, medical purpose and for licensed consumption. (2) Public sale should be disallowed and price raised so high that it goes beyond the buying capacity of ordinary people. (3) For hardened smokers, permits can be allowed for purchase from licensed govt. shops. (4) Punitive action, monetary or prison terms, should be initiated for unauthorised smokers or shops. (5) Declare public places or transports as "No smoking zones".
