Poll Roadmap
AL's Motia not happy, BNP's Ashraf hails

Awami League (AL) leader Motia Chowdhury yesterday said the Election Commission's (EC) roadmap for election is incomplete while BNP Joint Secretary General Ashraf Hossain welcomed the roadmap.

"The chief election commissioner (CEC) today announced a roadmap to the national polls, but there are uncertainty and ambiguity in everything," she told reporters at her residence in her reaction to the EC plan of action.

The AL leader said, "The whole process is so slow and the Election Commission is ignoring the demands of our movements although this Election Commission is the fruit of our movement."

She said they want a free and fair election as soon as possible as her party never thinks of going to power through unfair means, reports UNB.

Motia observed the CEC did not say anything about transparent ballot boxes, a demand of the AL-led 14-party combine.

She aired doubt about preparation of the electoral roll within October next year. In this context, she cited the EC-prepared voter list under a pilot project in Sreepur, Gazipur that contains many defects.

Joint Secretary General of BNP Ashraf Hossain, however, welcomed the election roadmap announced by the Election Commission yesterday and hoped that necessary steps would be taken to implement the roadmap.

"I hope the Election Commission would take necessary steps to hold elections according to the roadmap," he told The Daily Star last night.

Thanking the EC for the roadmap, he also said all uncertainty regarding elections have gone following the announcement of the roadmap.

Ashraf said the BNP would give formal reaction to the roadmap after examining it.
