"Bhager Manush" staged
Ershad Kamol
As part of the ongoing Citycell-Mahakal Theatre Festival '07, Samay Natyasampradaya staged Bhager Manush yesterday at the Experimental Theatre Stage, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.Mannan Heera has adapted the play from a popular Urdu short story, Toba Tek Singh, by Saadat Hasan Manto. Toba Tek Singh satires the "exchange agreement of the lunatics" between the governments of India and Pakistan two or three years after the Partition (1947). In the adaptation, Mannan has symbolically featured Toba Tek Singh -- one of the oldest Pakistani towns in central Punjab -- as a mental institution. Legendary Sikh religious figure Tek Singh is featured as one of the central characters in the play. Singh strongly opposes the partition that has separated people of a nation, in the name of religion. Aly Zaker is the director and set designer of the play. Samayer Proyojoney to be staged today Theatre Art Unit will stage Samayer Proyojoney at the Experimental Theatre Stage today. Adapted and directed by Mohammed Bari, the play is an adaptation of Zahir Raihan's short story with the same title. The play belongs to the school of thought that believes nothing in this world can be achieved solely by a premeditated mindset. Time, is the deciding factor. Samayer Proyojoney is set in a camp in 1971, where Freedom Fighters from different corners of the country, fighting the Pakistani military regime and their collaborators, have huddled. Reading the diary of a missing Freedom Fighter, Mamun, his comrades analyse the logic behind their role in the Liberation War. They realise that it is neither leadership nor patriotism, rather the changed times that have propelled them to fight for the nation. Kamaluddin Kabir is the set designer and Nasirul Haque Khokon is the light designer of the play.
