Growing passion for acting
Tête-à-tête with Farah Ruma
Jamil Mahmud
Muna, one of the central characters in the TV serial Pratnonari, currently being aired on Ekushey Television, is played by Farah Alam Ruma, better known as Farah Ruma. One of the busiest actors on small screen, Ruma, plays a Professor's daughter whose eccentric ways are quite endearing. Ruma started her career in media as a model. She started modelling after winning the 'Anadabichitra Photo-Shundori Contest' in 1997. However, she always nurtured a dream to be an actor. Talking about the move from modelling to acting, Ruma says, "I'd always been keen on acting but never really considered taking it up as my profession." She worked in some TV commercials and a few random plays. In 2004, Ruma became a fulltime TV actor. Besides Pratnonari, Ruma is busy with a mega-serial Ei shob Ondhokar, being aired on Banglavision. She is also working in several other serials and single episode plays including Mohon Khan's Shohorer Bhorer Phul and Animesh Aich's Frame-e Bandhano Prem. She has not given up doing TV commercials either. According to Ruma, "Modelling is not as easy as it looks, as models have to deliver a message in a period of 30 seconds or a minute." On acting she says, "To become a proficient actor one has to give the performing art form all his/her efforts and time." Ruma also expresses her interest in working in films, if she is offered the right story and character. Though in these last few years, the promising actor has donned several characters, she considers her role of a sex worker in the TV play Sampurna Rangin as the most challenging and remarkable. Her favourite actors are Subarna Mustafa, Bipasha Hayat and Shomi Kaisar.
