DU Correspondent
The number of audience who prefer alternate films that reflect cultural diversity, arts and values, to high-budget studio films, is increasing, speakers at a seminar on film said yesterday.Although alternate films are apparently under pressure due to the influence of globalisation, in many cases their audience have outnumbered those of the commercial films. They called for more efforts and creativity in making alternate films so that local films can get rid of the influences of globalisation and reach international audience. The seminar on 'Globalisation and world cinema' was organised by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) Film Club of Dhaka University (DU) and Globalisation Study Group at RC Majumdar auditorium on the DU campus. MCJ Chairman Prof Shaikh Abdul Salam presided over the seminar while filmmaker Tareq Masud, director of Matir Moina (The Clay Bird), delivered the keynote paper on the issue. Tareq said Hollywood-oriented filmmakers have created a certain trend of 'proto-type films' with a 'constructed taste' for audience in a bid to make their films commercially successful and they are dominating the global film industry. 'There is still a trend of imposing these proto-type global films on other film industries across the world, marginalising cinemas worldwide made up with local taste.
