Gaziul Haq can forget all but the days of '52

Language movement veteran Gaziul Haq is gradually losing memory and the ability to speak but his affection for the mother tongue and the memories of the movement still remain intact.

Gaziul suffered a stroke in 2001 and has been gradually losing memory and his ability to speak since then, reported private television channel ATN Bangla yesterday.

Even though he cannot speak clearly due to the brain haemorrhage he suffered, he gets excited every time the turbulent period of 1952 is mentioned.

According to his psychiatrist, the memory of the language movement might be the greatest memory he has and this is probably why he is not totally lost despite the massive stroke.

Assistant Prof of National Institute of Mental Health Shahida Chowdhury said Gaziul still remembers the language movement possibly due to his emotional attachment to the movement.

"How could I forget [the language movement of 1952], it cannot be forgotten," he said to the TV reporter and with emotion choked voice started singing the song "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February Ami Ki Bhulite Pari."
