Citycell-Mahakal Theatre Festival '07 begins today


To celebrate its 24th anniversary, theatre troupe Mahakal Natyasampradaya has arranged Citycell-Mahakal Theatre Festival '07. The 11-day theatre festival will be inaugurated today by eminent playwright Sayeed Ahmed at the Experimental Theatre Stage, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Noted playwright-litterateur Syed Shamsul Haque will attend the inaugural session as chief guest. Other renowned theatre personalities to speak at the programme are Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Nasiruddin Yousuff, Tariq Anam Khan and Golam Kuddus.

The discussion will be followed by a cultural programme featuring a dance performance by artistes of Spandan; actors of Mahakal will stage scenes from their current production Shikhondikatha. Katha Abritti Charcha Kendra will present a srutinataok (recitation of a theatre performance) titled Hazar Churashir Maa, written by Mahasheta Devi. Moreover. Chanu Gayener Dal from Manikganj will perform Kalu Gazir Pala. In the evening Mahakal Natyasam-pradaya will stage the play Shikhondikatha, written by Anon Zaman and directed by Haroonur Rashid. Shikhondikatha features the sufferings and struggles of the transgendered individuals.

On the arrangement of the theatre festival Meer Zahid Hassan, convenor of Mahakal Natyasampradaya, informs, "Though July 14 is our founding anniversary, because of certain limitations we have decided to hold the inauguration today. Besides staging our production Shikhondikatha, contemporary popular plays of other troupes are included at the festival. We have also invited Durbar Natya Goshthi from Tripura, India, to stage Tripura Rajyer Upakhyan. If we get the required permission from the authorities, the troupe will stage the play on the last day of the festival."

Plays included in the festival are Bhager Manush, Shamayer Proyojoney, Koinna, Projapoti, Bou Bashonti, Rupoboti, Jalodash, Meraj Fakirer Maa, Nakshi Kanthar Math and Raarang -- productions of theatre troupes Samay Natyagoshthi, Theatre Art Unit, Prachyanat, Natyakendra, Udichi Drama Section, Shubachan Natya Sangsad, Dhaka Padatik, Theatre, Bangladesh Theatre and Aranyak Natya Dal respectively.
