"Ash" deserves praise

We need to have hearts to celebrate the successes of our national heroes. And we have no doubt that Ashraful is one of them.

Though we live far away in Cambridge, our heart remains with Bangladesh cricket. We feel proud when TV commentators in Sky say He (Ash)is a genius!

But I was so much frustrated to watch television news in ATN and ntv during the second Test against Sri Lanka. There was no interview with Ashraful although two journalists from these two channels were staying with the team. It was good to see Sangakara praising Ash, but I was expecting Ashraful's reaction as well, which I am sure would give pleasure to other members of the team, the fans of the team and of course Ashraful himself. Probably our two journalists could not reach Ashraful (!).

I was also frustrated to see the coverage in the daily newspapers. Only The Daily Star covered it well.

Ashraful at the age of 22 has four Test hundreds to his name. Alistair Cook of England has five Test hundreds at the same age, and Cook is their national hero. Whenever I watched TV talk shows in the UK, they branded Cook as their run machine.

To me, the four centuries by Ashraful have much greater value than the five centuries by Cook. Remember Cook opens their innings, and in most cases bats without any pressure and without any target; in most cases only time is his target. On the contrary, Ashraful had to bat in most of his innings in tattering conditions; with 4-5 wickets down before 100 runs on the board.

We need to have love for the heroes Ashraful, Mushfiq, Aftab, Nafis, Mortaza, Rafiq and others.
