6 Mongla ward commissioners arrested

The joint forces yesterday picked up six ward commissioners of Mongla Pourashava on charges of corruption.

The joint forces also arrested Accounts Officer of the Pourashava Hannan Sarder from his office for helping ward commissioners misappropriate funds allocated for various projects.

The six ward commissioners are Shafiqur Rahman, Abdul Halim Howlader, Abdul Kader Talukder, Mohammad Alauddin, Kamala Begum and Arifa Islam. They were shown arrested under the Emergency Powers Act and handed over to Mongla Police Station in the afternoon.

According to the officer-in-charge of the police station, there are allegations of corruption against the arrested ward commissioners.

Earlier in April, the joint forces arrested Chairman of Mongla Pourashava Abdul Jalil Molla and two other ward commissioners Ayub Ali and Sheikh Abdul Hamid on charges of corruption.

Four other ward commissioners have been at large since the arrest of the chairman.
