BNP-backed CBA boss of CUFL jailed

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a BNP-backed CBA president of Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL) to two years' rigorous imprisonment, a fine of Tk 10 thousand or in default to suffer four more months in jail for taking bribe in return for a job.The same court sentenced five other leaders of Chittagong Port Sramik Dal to four-year rigorous imprisonment, Tk 6 thousand in fine or in default to spend six more months' rigorous imprisonment each on charge of violating Emergency Act, 2007 as they organised a rally and delivered provocative speeches against the caretaker government. Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Monwarul Islam handed down the verdicts. CBA president Sultanul Azim was held by Rapid Action Battalion on March 18 this year on different charges including bribery and smuggling. On April 06, Aurun Shekhor Devnath filed a case with Karnaphuli Police Station accusing the CBA leader of taking Tk 1.20 lakh from him (Aurun) on December 20, 2006 promising a low-paid office job. Charge sheet of the case was submitted on May 15 while the charge was framed on June 13. The five Sramik Dal leaders proven guilty by the court for violating the state of emergency are Mohammad Bazal Mian, Abdur Rauf, Shahadat Hossain, Abdul Matin and Mizanur Rahman. The five accused were arrested on May 17 this year from the Port Booking Office premises by joint forces after they organised a rally and delivered provocative speeches against the present government, said sources. Sub Inspector Ruhul Amin of Bandar Police Station filed a case against them the same day. Charge sheet of the case was submitted on May 20 and charge was framed on June 7.
