Arrest warrant issued against Bashundhara Group chief's son
Interpol help might be sought to arrest him

A Dhaka court yesterday issued arrest warrant against Shafiyat Sobhan Sanbir, son of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, in connection with the killing of Humayun Kabir Sabbir and directed the authorities concerned to send the warrant through Interpol to take him back to Bangladesh.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Alam passed the order after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a petition seeking arrest warrant against Sanbir, now in Britain.

In his forwarding report, CID Assistant Police Super Arman Ali said he came to know from different sources that Sanbir was directly involved with the killing and he is now in Britain.

Soon after the incident, Sanbir went there to avoid the arrest. So, he needs to be arrested and take him back to Bangladesh through Interpol, Arman said.

Body of Sabbir, 30, a director of Bashundhara Telecommunication Limited, was found stuck over the boundary fence of an apartment on Road 104 in Gulshan on July 5 last year.

Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of police who investigated the incident had found Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan's son Safiat Sobhan Sanbeer, another Bashundhara Director Shamsuddin Ahmed and Sanbeer's close associate Khairul Hasan Ujjal involved in the murder.

After Sanbeer's involvement was found his father and he met former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and requested him not to implicate his son in the murder.

Following the arrest of Babar he admitted that Sobhan went to him and agreed to provide Tk 50 crore against his demand of Tk 100 crore in exchange for not implicating Sanbeer in the case after investigators detected Sanbeer's involvement in the killing.

The detained former state minister for home also admitted that he received the bribe with the consent of the then premier Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman.

The joint forces have already recovered Babar's Tk 20 crore and deposited it with the Bangladesh Bank on May 25 after the former state minister admitted during interrogation to receiving the sum from the Bashundhara chairman for not implicating his son in the murder.
