17th National Art Biennale
Uttam Kumar Roy on his "Target: We and I" series
Ershad Kamol
Artist Uttam Kumar Roy is the winner of Shah AMS Kibria Award at the 17th National Art Biennale, organised by the Department of Fine Arts of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He has received the award for his painting Target: We and I-35. Target: We and I-35 features a human figure without a brain, but full of circuits in its head. And the blue coloured body is trapped in a spider's web. Red and black shades of the canvas indicate that the figure is in peril. Whose body is it? Artist Uttam Kumar Roy responds, "Not anyone in particular. The figure symbolically represents young individuals whose minds are being controlled by the corrupt leaders." Target: We and I-35 is part of a series of over 40 paintings -- satire of the contemporary political turmoil. He has been working on the series since 2004. That year, for Target: We and I-2, Roy won the Young Artist Award at the 15th National Young Artist Competition, also organised by the Department of Fine Arts, BSA. The artist would like to continue working on the series. Why? "Certain politicians in Bangladesh are exploiting youngsters to serve their own purpose; these naïve followers have become like preys caught in cobwebs. I would like to continue to delve into this issue though my work." The same figure is featured in each canvas of the series. How do you distinguish one canvas from another? "Through different use of colours and composition style," says the artist. Roy informs that he enjoys series based works as one theme can be analysed from different aspects. According to him, he uses oil on canvas as the medium. To quote Roy, "I prefer the medium, as delicate lines can be drawn comfortably in the medium, compared to others. I enjoy using delicate lines in my works." Uttam Kumar Roy has completed a five-year diploma from Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts (BAFA) and graduated as the top student of his batch. He has participated in several national and international competitions. Roy has won several prestigious awards including 1st Prize (Portrait) at the International Miniature Art Show titled "Miniature in Mariposa", at Sierra Artist Gallery, California, USA in 2002.
