171 killed in workplaces in 6 months


At least 171 workers were killed and 1050 others injured in occupational accidents at workplaces across the country in the first six months of this year, according to a study report.

Also, 14 women workers were sexually harassed during the period, said the study report of Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS).

Forty women are among those killed and 534 women are among those injured in occupational accidents.

Out of the 14 victims of sexual violence, four women were killed after violation, the study said.

The BILS prepared the report on the basis of reports published in 16 national dailies.

The findings show that the rate of fatal occupational accident was high in the construction sector where 40 workers were killed.

Twenty-five workers were killed in the garment sector and nine female workers were sexually assaulted.

There are also 21 domestic helps, 13 transport workers and eight shop and hotel workers on the list of fatal accidents.

At least 11 fishermen were killed, more than 200 remained missing, 28 were kidnapped and at least five were thrown into the sea due to trawlers capsize in cyclone or stormy weather and attacks by the pirates.

Four workers were killed in boiler blasts or other accidents in rice mills and six were killed while cleaning septic tanks, manholes and water reservoirs.

Four workers were killed in the ship-breaking yards. Three hawkers and three night guards are also on the list of dead.
