Home economics students want immediate holding of exams

Students of the Government Home Economics College yesterday staged a demonstration on the campus at Azimpur urging the authorities to hold examinations immediately.

They chanted slogans to press their demand.

Examinations of three home economics colleges are not being held following controversy over the examination committee despite expiry of the schedule. A section of teachers of Government Home Economics College refused to cooperate with the committee terming it partisan.

Bangladesh Home Economics College and National College of Home Economics are two non-government colleges while the Government Home Economics College is the only state-run institute. All the colleges run under the faculty of biological science of Dhaka University (DU).

Government Home Economics College teachers said they will not let the authorities hold the examinations if separate committees are formed.

College Principal Firoza Sultana said they have informed the vice-chancellor (VC) and the dean of biological science faculty about their problems many times. But the university authorities did not pay heed to the problems, she said.

"We demanded formation of separate committees to hold examinations and we sent a list of examination committees to the authorities concerned. But the university authorities again sent the same committee to the college authorities without any change," said a teacher of the college.

All the examinations of the three colleges are being held under a committee formed with representatives from all three colleges since 1998.

Teachers said the examination committees will comprise only teachers from Government Home Economics College.

Dean Prof Anwar Hossain said teachers of the government college are violating rules as their demand is unlawful. They would be responsible for the deferred examinations.

He said they are using the students of the college and instigating them against him by providing false information.

He said the dean has no scope to be partisan. Of the 38 examination committees, 28 chairmen are from Government Home Economics College.

VC Prof SMA Faiz told journalists that everyone will have to be flexible enough to comply with the decision of the special committee of courses.
