Gani submits wealth statement

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia's brother and ex-official of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Shamim Eskander yesterday appeared before the members of taskforces at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) head office at Shegunbagicha to face questioning regarding his wealth statement.Meanwhile the ACC yesterday received wealth statement of detained former chief of forest department Osman Gani through Dhaka Central Jail authorities where he showed his movable and immovable properties including lands, houses, gold, savings in bank and cash. ACC sources said, Shamim Eskander, a high profile corruption suspect in the ACC's second list of 21 top graft suspects was asked to go to the ACC for questioning about his wealth statement that he submitted last month. Shamim went to the ACC office along with his lawyer advocate Ahmed Azam Khan at around 10:30am and stayed about 45 minutes. A source linked to the questioning process said task forces members sought explanations and evidence from Shamim regarding some of his assets that he showed in his wealth statement. Among the members of a task force a defense personnel, police inspector and an assistant director of the ACC questioned Shamim. WEALTH OF EX-FOREST BOSS Former chief conservator of forests Osman Gani, now detained in Dhaka central jail, has sent his wealth statement through prison authorities that reached the ACC yesterday. Gani has showed his immovable properties worth TK 1.3 crore in his own and his wife's names, said ACC sources referring to the statement. He has a five-storey building at Jhigatola, a 7.5 katha plot at Purbachal Model Town project, two 5-katha plots at Uttara model town, 15 katha agricultural land at Dakkhin Khan, and 6 decimal wetland in Barisal, the statement said. Gani also showed Tk 1.4 crore as his savings at bank, and 300 bhori gold in the names of his wife, daughter, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. The former forest department chief was arrested on May 29 with around Tk 1 crore in cash that was tucked away inside his Uttara home. In his wealth statement, he showed this money as cash savings.
