Govt committed to holding credible polls
Chief adviser says

Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday said the present caretaker government is committed to holding a free, fair and acceptable election to give the country's democratic order a firm footing.

The CA made the remarks when outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador Ngo Van Hoa made a farewell call on him at his office.

The envoy said the caretaker government's achievements in its reform measures and contributions to the electoral process will not only help hold the next election in a fair and neutral manner but also create a strong base for future elections.

The CA said his government is also working to establish good governance and keep the wheel of economy moving, according to his Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim who was present at the meeting.

He said Bangladesh considers Vietnam as a good friend and the relations between the two countries are fully based on solid foundation and cooperation. "The bilateral ties, particularly in the field of economy, will be further strengthened."

The Vietnamese envoy said the trade volume between Vietnam and Bangladesh was $20 million in 2003, which has increased to $65 million.

He said they have set a target to take the trade volume to $100 million by 2008, which is achievable against the backdrop of improving relations between the two countries.

The CA said exchange of visits between the two countries should take place at all levels, including cultural and private levels.

The envoy said Vietnam is grateful to Bangladesh for its support to his country in becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
