Cultural programme by indigenous communities


Cultural groups from ethnic communities living in Mymensingh, Tangail, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Netrokona and Sunamganj district held a programme at the CARITAS Regional Auditorium in Mymensingh town recently.

The cultural programme titled "Hai un Ching an,Ching Dak Bewalko Rak Kina" (Come to practice and revive our traditional indigenous culture) indicates a positive meaning. The event was attended by hundreds of indigenous artistes in colourful traditional attire.

Several indigenous groups including Garo (traditionally known as "Mandi"), Kooch, Hajang, Banai, Dhalu and Barman took part at the function. Guri Boua and Chambil dance of the Garos entertained the audience. Traditional Kooch, Hajang and others dances as well as songs followed.

Earlier a discussion was held. Garo intellectual Subash Gengcham chaired the discussion. Among others, Zobayedur Rahman (additional deputy commissioner), Robert Mankin (acting director of Birishiri Cultural Academy), Uttam Richil, Father Monindra Chiram, Yunus Shangma and Diliya Hagidak were also present at the programme.

The speakers stressed on the revival of indigenous traditions, some of which are on the verge of extinction. This would benefit the future generations, they reiterated.
