CCC places Tk 397 cr budget

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) yesterday announced a Tk 396.79 crore budget with a surplus of Tk 2.27 crore for 2007-08 financial year.Acting Mayor M Manzur Alam presented the proposed budget at a meeting with the ward commissioners at the CCC auditorium. A revised budget of Tk 242.27 crore with a surplus of Tk 4.62 crore for 2006-07 fiscal was also announced at the meeting. Presenting the budget, the acting mayor said the objective of the proposed budget was to make the CCC a self-reliant organisation and expand its area of activities. According to the proposed budget, Tk 218.47 crore will come from own sources of CCC and the remaining Tk 178.32 crore from relief aid, development grants and other sources. CCC expects to earn Tk 42.61 crore from rents and income of different establishments in 2007-08 fiscal while the figure was Tk 65.86 crore in the revised budget for the current fiscal. It aims to realise outstanding taxes and supplementary taxes amounting to Tk 63.87 crore in 2007-08 fiscal while the figure was Tk 9.96 crore in the revised budget for current fiscal. The proposed budget sets a target of realising Tk 48.29 crore in taxes and supplementary taxes in 2007-08 fiscal when the CCC collected Tk 26.65 crore in the current fiscal. In his speech, the acting mayor sought cooperation of the government in realising huge outstanding taxes from the government and other organisations. He also placed a proposal of six projects involving Tk 546 crore and sought approval and fund allocations. They include Tk 132 crore project for infrastructural, environmental and sewerage system development; Tk 100 crore project for development of roads; Tk 169 crore project for Chittagong urban transport development; Tk 70 crore project for disposal of garbage; Tk 15 crore project for installation of power distribution lines; and Tk 60 crore project for setting up a 10 MW power station. The budget proposed an allocation of Tk 142.30 crore to meet the operational and maintenance expenditure of the CCC and Tk 252.22 crore to meet other expenditure. Of the total operational and maintenance expenditure, Tk 68.07 crore will be spent on salaries, allowances and wages, Tk 20.50 crore on repair and maintenance, and Tk 21.05 crore on power, fuel and water.
