Pro-AL, left-leaning teachers boycott DU Senate session

Protesting the irregularities in the appointment of teachers and officials and other corruption at Dhaka University during the tenure of BNP-Jamaat alliance government, pro-Awami League and left-leaning members of DU Senate boycotted the Senate session that began yesterday.They also protested the induction of three new members into DU Syndicate, including Treasurer Prof Syed Abul Kalam Azad, saying that the appointment of the treasurer as a syndicate member is a clear violation of the 1973 ordinance. Some 12 teachers from pro-AL Blue Panel and left-leaning Pink Panel walked out of the annual session of the Senate, the highest policymaking body of the university, after Vice-Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz delivered his speech and the treasurer placed the annual budget for 2007-08 fiscal. Later at a press conference, they urged the government to investigate the irregularities and corruption and remove the treasurer and two others from the Syndicate for the sake of upholding the spirit of '73 ordinance. They said the present BNP-Jamaat-backed DU administration has appointed a total of 671 teachers and over 350 employees during the last five years on political consideration. Blue Panel Convener Prof Hossain Monsur said the university administration and every other sector have been politicised during the tenure of the previous government. About the treasurer's appointment, Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said the authorities have violated the '73 ordinance by appointing the economic affairs' authority in the policymaking body. Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta) General Secretary Prof Anwar Hossain said the partisan administration is continuing to resort to corruption as they have done in the last five years. Prof Sadeka Halim said the DU administration has been playing farcical game in the name of investigation into various allegations against the pro-BNP and Jamaat teachers and employees. She urged the government to revive the issue of 52 first classes at political science department as many questions remain unanswered. On the first day of the session, Treasurer Prof Azad placed the proposed budget of Tk 142.45 crore for fiscal 2007-08 without any deficit.
