Ex-MP Redwan, Lobi's wife held
Aman, wife sued for extortion

The army-led joint forces last night arrested former state minister for Liberation War affairs and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Redwan Ahmed in the city's Baridhara area.

Earlier in the day, Gulshan police held Khushnud Asgar, wife of detained former BNP lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi, at a city hospital in connection with a graft case.

Sources in the forces said they picked up Redwan soon after he came out of LDP leader Col (retd) Oli Ahmed's press briefing at 9:30pm. He has been taken to an undisclosed place for interrogation.

Accused in three cases filed under the narcotics control act, special powers act and the penal code, Redwan was earlier granted bail by the High Court, one of his lawyers said.

In a late-night development, the joint forces were raiding his Uttara residence, said police sources. He joined the BNP in 1991 while an independent lawmaker. Before that, he was involved in Jatiya Party politics.

Redwan held different portfolios as a state minister during 2001-2006 and on the last day of the BNP-led four-party alliance rule he left the party to be with the LDP.

EXTORTION CASE AGAINST AMAN, WIFE
Khorshed Alam, owner of Tanzir Constructions, last night filed a Tk 70-lakh extortion case against Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman with the Gulshan Police Station.

In the case he alleged that Aman demanded Tk 2 crore for winning him the work of Dhaleshwari Bridge in December 2005. He deposited Tk 70 lakh in Sabera's account.

KHUSHNUD CASE
Khushnud Asgar was undergoing treatment for heart problems at Labaid Cardiac Hospital.

Following her arrest, police submitted a petition to a Dhaka court for her to be shown arrested in the case against her and Lobi for giving false information in the wealth statement.

After hearing, Judge Azizul Haq granted the petition and directed jail authorities to produce her before the court tomorrow if she recovers.

The case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission is now pending with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, Dhaka.

Our court correspondent reports: The arms case against detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar was transferred yesterday to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court.

After scrutinising the case dockets and documents, Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Alam passed the transfer order.

SI Helal Uddin of Gulshan Police Station filed the case against Babar on June 3 on charge of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.

Meanwhile, DCC ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam was placed on a two-day remand in an extortion case.
