Hasina accuses govt of playing double standard

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said intra-party reform proposals are being announced while political activities continue to be banned and asked the caretaker government to explain why it is playing 'double standard'.

"On the one hand there is a ban on politics and on the other some people are doing politics. Why someone will be given scope to do politics and at the same time some others will not be given?" she questioned.

"If this goes on, then the state of emergency and ban on politics be withdrawn," the former prime minister demanded talking to reporters while coming out of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.

Hasina went there to see ailing city AL adviser Dr Moazzem Hossan, Kazi Selina Akhter, wife of former joint secretary Sheikh Habibullah, and Gazi Afia Begum, sister of Netrokona district unit Chhatra League leader Gazi Mozammel Haque Tuku.

Asked to comment on BNP's reform proposals announced by party Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan on Monday, Hasina said everything would be clear if constitutions of the AL and BNP are compared. AL is a democratic party with no individual's supremacy and reform in the party is a continuous process, she said.

"We have been reforming the party since its inception. Even we are the first political party in Bangladesh that placed electoral reform proposals," said the former premier. "It is time to see how many of our reform proposals have been implemented."

On the Supreme Court judgement regarding updating of voter list, the AL chief said it has not been implemented as yet. Rather, the judgment has been 'dishonoured, she said adding that five months have passed but transparent ballot boxes are yet to be prepared.

In this context, she asked why the people should be deprived of exercising their democratic right of franchise. They should have been given the opportunity to choose their leaders through vote, she said.

Hasina allowing normal process of doing politics to ensure continuity of democracy in the country.

About AL intra-party reforms, the party chief said before carrying out any reforms, a meeting of the party Central Working Committee would have to be held. If approved by it, the proposals have to be placed to the subject committee for scrutiny and finally those are to be approved at the national council of the party.

Expressing concern over the price hike of essentials, she said government steps to control it have not been reflected in the market. Prices of rice, pulses, edible oil, salt and such other essentials have gone beyond the general commoner's reach and the trend continues, causing immense sufferings to people, she added.

Meanwhile, restriction on entry to Hasina's residence Sudha Sadan has been tightened since June 19. Police did not allow AL Presidium Member Motia Chowdhury and some other leaders to enter it yesterday.
