Govt urged to rehabilitate footpath hawkers

Bangladesh Sammilita Footpath Hawkers Parishad yesterday urged the caretaker government to rehabilitate hawkers who had been evicted from the city streets after the state of emergency was declared.In a statement, Parishad President Md Waliullah Patwari said there are some three lakh hawkers in the city, but the 14 holiday markets can accommodate only about 15,000 hawkers. The remaining 2.8 lakh hawkers along with their families are passing their days in inhuman condition as they are unemployed now, he added. He also called on the government to provide financial assistance for the families of hawkers who were run over by a speeding truck at Gulistan recently.
