An extortion case was filed against former BNP lawmaker of Pabna-3 constituency KM Anwarul Islam, his wife Siddika Anwar and the former lawmaker's 'close associate' Rejaul Karim in Cognizance Court-2 of the district yesterday. This is the second extortion case against the former lawmaker in a week. Complainant of yesterday's case, treasurer of Bhangura upazila BNP Wares Ali, said the former MP and his wife demanded Tk 5 lakh when he sought permission to arrange a circus on the premises of Bhangura High School last year. Even after paying 2 lakh 71 thousand taka to the former lawmaker, he failed to get the permission to arrange the circus that was planned for the development of the school, he added. Magistrate Siddiqur Rahman of the cognisance court ordered the officer-in-charge of Bhangura Police Station to investigate the allegation. On June 19, another extortion case was filed against Anwarul Islam and three other BNP leaders in Faridpur Police Station for demanding Tk 3 lakh. The former lawmaker has been absconding since February 17 following the joint forces' operation to recover corrugated iron sheets of government relief fund. UNB adds: An extortion case was filed against six people, including former BNP lawmaker Dr Dewan M Salahuddin Babu, with Savar Police Station Sunday night. AKM Azad Rashid, a resident of Savar Dakkhinpara, filed the case. Rashid alleged that the accused demanded Tk 5 lakh from him as toll in July 2005 at the behest of the former MP. "As I didn't pay the money, they threatened to put me on crossfire of Rab," Azad said in his complaint. He alleged that the accused also tried to grab his land.
