"Hul-Hul": A play on indigenous people

"Hul-Hul", a play featuring the struggles of the indigenous people of the northern part of the country spanning over 200 years, was staged recently, at the Natyasamity Auditorium in Dinajpur.

The play is written by prominent dramatist Md. Shahjahan Shah of Dinajpur. The story narrates the history of the Santal community. Artistes of 'Naborupi', a Dinajpur-based cultural organisation, staged the play. Bangladesh Group Theater Federation and Bengal Foundation jointly sponsored the show.

The play highlights the role of the indigenous people of the northern region during the Santal uprising of 1858 and also during the Liberation War in 1971.

The play stresses on the lack of initiative by the concerned authority to preserve the culture and language of the Santals, leading towards a steady decline of their age-old heritage.

The play, garnering the lives and tragedies of the Santals, was well received by the audience.
