Many faces of Bangladesh
Photo exhibition at Zainul gallery 1

Shamsunnahar Lovely's first solo photography exhibition is on at Zainul Gallery 1, Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka Universtity (DU). Prior to this, Lovely held an exhibition of collages made of bed sheets, sarees and other clothing materials, in 1999 at the same venue.

The photo exhibition was inaugurated by noted cultural personality Mustafa Monwar on June 16.

An MSS in International Relations (DU), Lovely is not a professional photographer. However, the minor technical details that may be missing in her work, she makes up for it and more with her enthusiasm and passion for the medium.

The exhibition features 25 photographs -- all in colour. The theme seems to be Bangladesh, in its entirety. Not just the appealing lush green that's just a few hours away from the urban areas but people living in harmony with nature also become subjects of Lovely's photos. There are certain photos that bear the impression of abstract art.

Close shots of tree trunks, now bare as part of the bark is gone, shows a crimson pattern that can appear as a number of things -- an unmistakable trait of abstraction, allowing the viewer to perceive and interpret an artwork in his/her own way. "Balu O Sandal", "Stor Binyas" are other works that demonstrate this characteristic.

Indigenous people living in the hilly regions of the country have also become subjects. "Jibon Jemon" shows an elderly indigenous man resting by a fire and two dogs meandering around. "Upojati" captures the very familiar idyllic picture of an indigenous woman walking down an uneven hilly track, carrying a large wicker basket on her back, a hut on a raised platform next to the path.

"Kochi" highlights a simile between nature and man -- a toddler with a sickle next to a paddy field with fresh green sprouts.

Lovely's works show promise. The exhibition ends tomorrow.
