Bangladeshis in Malaysia
Fahmi Mahmood, On e-mail
I have been studying in Kuala Lumpur for the last 18 months. I have come across many Bangladeshi workers who are going through a rough time. This is true that they are under-paid. They are not given the facilities that they were supposed to get. The recruiting agencies in Bangladesh have given them hope but never fulfilled them. In such cases the Malaysian government actually cannot help. Today many Bangladeshis are looked down and treated badly because of our misdeeds. When a Bangladeshi student comes to Malaysia with a student pass, he or she is supposed to study and not work full-time anywhere in Malaysia, but if anyone who comes and does a survey, he or she can easily observe the deviations. So from my point of view, at first we Bangladeshis should go by the rules and regulations of the Malaysian government. As for the Bangladeshi legal work permit holders, it is known some of them are mistreated. So, our High Commission has to address the issue to protect the interests of the workers.
